Book your next golf trip to Åland! With two 18-hole courses, Slottsbanan and Kungsbanan and the short-hole course Prinsessan, Ålands GK is the optimal golf course for everyone.
The golf course is closed for the season and will reopen in 2025.
For two years, Ålands Golfklubb has been rebuilding their 18-hole course, Castle Course (Slottsbanan). In the summer of 2020, the completely renovated course opened to the public. The course was also selected as one of the playing courses for a sub-competition of the Ladies European Tour, which was scheduled for the autumn of 2022, making it a championship course.
The club enlisted the services of Danish course architect Philip Spogárd, who developed a new master plan for the course. Spogárd recommended better utilization of Slottsundet Bay, which the course runs alongside. The course was redesigned to incorporate the water more extensively into the game than before, according to Åsa Nordström at Ålands Golfklubb. She pointed to new holes 9 and 10, located alongside Slottsundet, where golfers can, if they dare, cross the water to shorten the distance to the flag.
Another significant change is that the sea is now visible from all 18 holes. The course also offers fantastic views of the medieval Kastelholm Castle on the opposite side of the bay. According to Åsa Nordström, the former club director at ÅGK, they fully leverage their unique environment after the renovation.
Tactics have become more important as well. Only one of the 18 new holes on Castle Course is situated on land that was previously not part of the golf course. The other holes have been reconfigured within the footprint of the old course, resulting in significant changes. Some old holes have been merged to create longer holes, while others have been split into shorter holes. The direction of play on some holes has also been altered. The renovation introduced new tees, more undulating greens, and increased tactical opportunities. Golfers can now approach the same hole in multiple ways based on their skill level, according to Nordström.
