Indigo Restaurant & Bar is a versatile establishment, offering a lunch restaurant, fine dining, a bar, and a bistro. It's like a second living room in the town, where Scandinavian and southern European cuisines are expertly blended, presenting classic flavors and well-known dishes in fresh contexts.
On Friday and Saturday evenings, Indigo also plays a vital role in Mariehamn's nightlife, drawing a lively crowd to its popular bar. During the summer, a spacious and charming patio welcomes guests, providing a relaxed environment from early lunch to late evening.
The restaurant was founded by Stig Grönlund and Björn Ekstrand in the spring of 2004. In the autumn of 2012, Björn moved on, and Stig's new partner became the well-known Åland person, Dennis Jansson. Dennis also manages the nightclub Kino and the pizzeria, Diablo next door.
The restaurant is situated in what is probably Mariehamn's best-preserved stone house. Its oldest sections date back to the late 18th century, when the city more closely resembled a village. In the 1870s, shipowner and merchant Victor Starck build two warehouses for his shipping and wholesale trade, one in brick and the other in granite. These warehouses stored cement and various construction materials, and at times, even served as a Brandy warehouse. To protect against theft, bars were placed on the windows, and the building occasionally doubled as a prison. At the beginning of the 20th century, shipowner and consul Erik Nylund and his wife, Elin, took over the property, including the dwelling house, storehouse, and baker's cottage, which now houses the Bagarstugan café.
Where the stairs now lead to Indigo's bar, a chute was once used for dropping sacks of cement and other goods to the lower floor. Horses from the countryside would gather on Nygatan for loading. The building served as a warehouse until the 1970s when it was converted into a dairy. In April 2004, Indigo Restaurant was opened. Today, the magazine's history is evident in the charming stone walls and the cozy atmosphere, complete with wooden beams in the attic where the bar is located.
